Salteh's review of Sewer
November 24, 2007, by Salteh.Sewer was the first Open Beta map ETQW players got to play. It's mixture of indoor/outdoor combat meant that it was the more popular Open Beta map. This review offers a quick explanation of the Sewer map.
Construct the EMP generator
The first stage of the map has GDF attacking the Strogg base, trying to repair the EMP generator. GDF need the EMP generator to melt the Strogg force fields. There is a forward spawn GDF can capture to spawn closer to the action. This spawn brings them closer to their targer, but does not have any vehicles GDF can use. They will need to carefully consider where to spawn.
Strogg get to plant mines and APT / AVT's near the EMP generator in an attempt to stop the GDF. You wouldn't want your base shields to melt, would you?
Destroy the sewer grates!
Next the GDF have to destroy the sewer grates deep inside the Strogg base. These grates provide access to the sewer controls. The action mainly happens indoors and there are plenty of choke points for the Strogg to focus on. Brave Strogg forces may attempt to recapture the GDF's 2nd forward spawn, sending them back to the EMP generator spawn.
Hack the sewer controls!
It's time for GDF to flush the Strogg out of the sewers. To do this they need to hack the sewer controls. It's a long walk to the sewer controls for both Strogg and GDF, so spawn hosts are vital here. Once the GDF get in the sewer controls room and manage to get rid of the spawn hosts the game is usually over quickly.
There are lots of alternative attack routes on this map. For the first objective GDF can destroy the base barricade so they are able to easily drive vehicles to the EMP generator. Once GDF complete that objective and have to destroy the sewer grates they can capture another forward spawn and use 3+ alternative routes to the grates. The controls room has a couple of different entrances as well - there's never a dull moment for the defending Strogg!
